In vitro Fermentation Profile and Methane Production of Kikuyu Grass Harvested at Different Sward Heights

چکیده

Highly digestible forages are associated with an in vitro low-methane (CH 4 ) rumen fermentation profile and thus the possibility of reducing CH emissions from forage-based systems. We aimed to assess ruminal profile, including production, top stratum Kikuyu grass ( Cenchrus clandestinus - Hochst. ex Chiov harvested at different sward heights (10, 15, 20, 25, 30 cm). Herbage samples (incubating substrate) were analyzed for their chemical composition, organic matter digestibility (IVOMD), morphological components. In incubations performed under a randomized complete block design four independent runs each treatment. Gas production (GP), dry (IVDMD), total volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentration, acetate, propionate, butyrate proportions measured following 24 48 h incubation. had similar contents matter, neutral detergent fiber, crude protein all treatments. However, higher fiber (ADF) content taller than smaller tendency metabolizable energy (ME) IVOMD decrease as height increased found. Similarly, stem + sheath mass tended increase increasing height. Amongst nutrients, ME r = −0.65) IVDMD −0.64) negatively correlated p < 0.001) ADF was positively 0.73, 0.001). Both GP related both incubation times. Sward below cm display VFAs high propionate low trend toward lower methane per unit IVDMD. These findings important aid decision-making on optimal manage animal grazing opportunity reduce production.

Methane Production of Different Forages in In vitro Ruminal Fermentation

An in vitro rumen batch culture study was completed to compare effects of common grasses, leguminous shrubs and non-leguminous shrubs used for livestock grazing in Australia and Ghana on CH4 production and fermentation characteristics. Grass species included Andropodon gayanus, Brachiaria ruziziensis and Pennisetum purpureum. Leguminous shrub species included Cajanus cajan, Cratylia argentea, G...

Production, Nutritional Quality and In vitro Methane Production from Andropogon gayanus Grass Harvested at Different Maturities and Preserved as Hay or Silage

Andropogon gayanus is an important grass due to its high biomass production, drought tolerance and favorable growth on low fertility acidic soils. Currently, there is little research on the impact of growth stage on the nutritional quality or the degree of CH4 production that may arise from this forage during ruminal fermentation. The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of re...

Phenolic Composition, Fermentation Profile, Protozoa Population and Methane Production from Sheanut (Butryospermum Parkii) Byproducts In vitro

Sheanut cake (SNC), expeller (SNE) and solvent extractions (SNSE) samples were evaluated to determine their suitability in animal feeding. The CP content was highest in SNSE (16.2%) followed by SNE (14.7%) and SNC (11.6%). However, metabolizable energy (ME, MJ/kg) was maximum in SNC (8.2) followed by SNE (7.9) and SNSE (7.0). The tannin phenol content was about 7.0 per cent and mostly in the fo...

The Effects of Phenolic Compounds in Iranian Propolis Extracts on in vitro Rumen Fermentation, Methane Production and Microbial Population

The objective of this study was to determine the chemical compounds of Iranian propolis (IP) extracts and to show flavonoids and phenol effects on methane production, fermentation characteristics and rumen microbial population (in vitro). In this study two diets with different concentrate: forage ratios as (HC: high concentrate) and (MC: middle concentrate), respectively as non-supplemented or ...

Silage fermentation attributes and certain rumen parameters in sheep fed two grass silages harvested at different stages of maturity

The aim of this study was to compare two tropical grass species, Panicum maximum and Digitaria eriantha, in terms of silage fermentation attributes and certain rumen fermentation characteristics of silage made either at the boot or full bloom stages of growth. A lower silage pH was recorded for the D. eriantha than for the P. maximum silage. Neither species nor maturity stage had a significant ...
